Why Camas?
“Everyone’s moving to Camas,” they say. I’m not sure who the “they” are but it is a popular area for many reasons! Camas sits off of Hwy 14 which runs east/west of the Columbia River. Camas used to be a paper mill town hence Camas High School’s mascot, The Papermakers, but it has grown into a popular area with a lovely downtown and many new housing developments. You will find older and historic homes in the downtown area and many new neighborhoods that have sprung up in the surrounding areas.
In recent years, Camas has boasted of great schools, which you can learn more about here. Basketball has been particularly successful in both Union High School and Camas High School and the games are a blast to watch. Downtown Camas is delightfully charming and it’s fun to browse and shop the local businesses year round.
Fun outdoor activities include Lacamas Lake Park, where there's beautiful running, walking and biking trails along the lake and woods. It’s not a secret, but it is a nice place to visit and get outside. Another gem is located very close to Camas: Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge runs along the Columbia River in Washougal (just a hop-skip-and-a-jump away). If you are a birder or enjoy biking, walking, or running, this is a very cool spot. It has several accessible areas that even low-clearance mobility devices are able to access and enjoy. There are pet restrictions so be sure to check out their website to see what you can do where. If you are a golfer, Camas Meadows Golf Club can be your spot.
